EPL’s May 2016 Product Advisory Team Meeting Recap

May was an exciting month at EPL, as we were thrilled to host our second Product Advisory Team (PAT) Meeting here in our hometown of Birmingham, Ala., at The Wynfrey Hotel on May 23—24, 2016. The biannual strategic meeting provides an avenue to connect more deeply with many of our credit union customers, discuss new developments within EPL’s “Connection Suite” of products and collaborate to identify collective top areas of focus for the upcoming year.

This customer-centric event is significant and meaningful to EPL, as we value our customers and their members’ experiences above all else—it is the core of our industry. We were very pleased with the turnout at the May meeting, with a larger number of credit unions participating than at our first PAT meeting in September 2015. The increased participation is more evidence that our customers know their voices are heard, and they value the opportunity to connect with us and other credit unions in this forum.

Not only is the PAT intended to be the direct voice of EPL’s customer base, but also is intended to empower growth, maximize revenue and improve members’ experiences at credit unions of all sizes. During the first day of meetings, we had the opportunity to discuss progress on initiatives laid out last fall, including general ledger enhancements, relationship pricing, in-house credit cards, proprietary lending services, e-communications, teller operations, online banking and other functionalities of our technology offering, such as security, client support and architecture.

On day two, we engaged collaboratively to hone in on top areas of focus, and will direct our attention toward additional capabilities for the general ledger, more choices and options in lending within i-POWER® and also via integrations, online banking enhancements, major additions to document management, user interface enhancements and advanced account research, including great ATM, debit card and electronic interaction enhancements.

We have recognized the critical need for more in-depth communication on industry issues, and need you—our subject matter experts—to share your institutional knowledge and experience with us during our smaller focus groups. Your insight is invaluable to the process, and plays such a vital role in helping us discover what is working well and what we need to improve upon. Customer insight is what allows us to continue to build a system that better accommodates evolving needs.

Our post-meeting feedback surveys showed that customers positively responded to the new format of the meeting, and we will continue to refine our approach in an effort to increase engagement and streamline various processes. One thing is for certain—we are convinced of the value created by our PAT meetings—not just for improving EPL’s technology offering, but also for building deeper relationships with our customer base as a whole.

At EPL, customer collaboration does not begin with or end at the PAT meeting. We invite you to continue to share your thoughts, concerns and ideas with our customer support team as we look toward our next PAT meeting in November 2016. Until then, we will work tirelessly to deliver on the issues that that matter most to our customers.

If you have questions about EPL’s PAT, please let us know on Twitter, Facebook or via email at rhiannon.stone@epl.net!

CUs helping CUs as people helping people

If two heads are better than one … imagine what we could ALL do together!!!

Online social communities are changing the game for leaders, customers, employees, brands and our culture.  These online communities have real business value when it comes to learning from others and collaborating because many of us are working towards common goals for our business and professional lives.

That's why EPL introduced the e3 Community, made up of people who share a common purpose in the credit union industry.  The goal is to enhance the way credit unions collaborate - to draw on individual strengths, share perspectives and learn from each other in a vibrant, synergistic environment.

What does “e3” stand for?
Its all about Evolution, Extension, and Exploration.

When you think about it, it represents the whole credit union philosophy of "People Helping People!"

The e3 community is a “learning community” designed to help foster opportunities for people to work together, solve problems, and generate ides … and its a convenient way to do so – anytime, anywhere. And the more information you have, the smarter the decisions you’ll make for your credit union.

So what can you learn?
Question… are you interested in collaborating with other credit unions to learn:
  • What products worked for them
  • How they increased their loan portfolio
  • How they are dealing with new regulations
  • Or, working together to share credit union resources and help each other in times of need?

There are over 600 users on our e3 Community accessing knowledge, collaborating and voting on ideas for our credit union system.

We’ve seen many great examples of knowledge sharing in our online community. A great example is a credit union that was very new to the EPL system who reached out for other’s experiences with the popular instant card issue solution.  They wanted to know if anyone in the group had already made the decision to go with a solution, if they could share their experiences and what choices and options were best.  We saw several willing credit unions reach out and make recommendations.  EPL staff shared other’s experiences as well and also shared “comparison” and “things to consider” information.

We’ve also seen a lot of input in the world of compliance and security, which all credit unions know is one of the biggest hurdles in the industry.

There are heightened expectations and many risks facing you today so unlocking the value of peer collaboration to share best practices and build productive relationships is key.  This is what the community is all about, being able to reach out to others, whether a peer credit union leader or an EPL subject matter expert … We are informally bound together in this network by shared expertise and passion for a common endeavor!

The community is about Diversity!  It increases the opportunity for diversity of thought and approaches as an online community atmosphere can eliminate the boundaries of location, philosophies, and even personality styles.  The outcomes … enhanced potential for all members, the possibility that new knowledge will be created and the enhancement of the effectiveness of the overall credit union movement.

Do you have S.M.E.s?

"Do I have Subject Matter Experts for my credit union that can help us grow in the financial market?"

"I have an awesome team that has strong expertise throughout the credit union that is driven by teamwork in managing our members’ needs and executing our brand. It feels so good to have this strong team to support me! Since I don’t have to be in the trenches all the time, the board and I can focus on strategic new membership growth. Additionally I can continue to develop Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and feel confident that I have succession plans in place."

Is this your reality or is it a dream you long for?

If you are not living the dream, hopefully you are positioned to see that dream become a reality in the very near future.  No doubt there are key areas within the credit union that should have defined SMEs.

Your SMEs Must:
  • Be challenged to own their responsibilities by rolling up their sleeves,
  • Understand the credit union’s philosophy and business requirements to do their job with key communication,
  • Have strong competency and the ability to help their peers and credit union to grow.

You should also consider having SMEs diversified in that you have it internally within your organization as well as externally - such as your data processor. The goal and burden is then shared, obstacles are generally overcome quicker and there is most likely a positive impact on strategic initiatives.

A strong SME team (both internal and external) should be one that is collaborating together, that can show proven work, has strong knowledge for best industry practices and that is helping your credit union grow.

"Wow! I do have an awesome team!"
